HUNGERFORD
in West Berkshire

Hungerford montage

Welcome to Hungerford    French EnglishGermanItalianSpanish

Hungerford is a small historic town set in the midst of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the western fringe of Berkshire bordering Wiltshire to the West, Hampshire to the South and Oxfordshire to the North.

The town centre is located four miles to the South of Junction 14 on the M4, eight miles to the West of Newbury and the A34 Birmingham to Southampton road, thus giving excellent road links from the whole country. Its proximity to the M4 motorway (just five minutes away), and its welcoming hostelries, make it the ideal place to break a long journey passing between London and Bristol for rest and refreshment. The town also enjoys a main line rail service from London Paddington station.

Hungerford is a busy traditional market town: there is an open market in the High Street each Wednesday. It is renowned for its many antique shops of specific interest to many visitors.

The town's historic market status is perpetuated by the significant number of small independent retail establishments providing visitor and resident alike personal service across a wide range of products. Locating some of these shops will introduce visitors to the charming, but hidden, corners of Hungerford. The town enjoys a wide variety of eating places that cater for the quick cup of coffee, the lunchtime snack or the three-course evening meal. Several are located on the High Street, others less obviously but within yards of the town centre, and even more within a short journey in villages and hamlets in the surrounding countryside.

The town is surrounded by open common land, five minutes walk from its centre where visitors may enjoy a relaxed walk and an abundance of flora and fauna.

Hungerford appears to be a thriving modern town with Georgian origin. In reality it is much older – a market town with an interesting history.

Hungerford is a great place to base yourself to explore our own (Berkshire) and the surrounding counties - particularly Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

It's the 1940's - and a victory parade!
