A modern medical practice providing excellent medical care and a range of additional services, with friendly helpful staff in a modern purpose-designed building.
The practice has nearly 8000 patients, and covers an area of about 90 square miles, although 80% of patients are within three miles of the surgery premises. 65% live in Hungerford itself.
There are six partners, four nurses, and a full complement of excellent administrative and support staff.
The purpose-built surgery building in The Croft was originally built in 1959, but after three extensions during the 1970s and 1980s, the surgery was doubled in size and remodelled in 1993. It is in a splendid setting and has ample space, providing patients and staff with a relaxed environment. There are six consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, in addition to extensive administrative rooms.
The partners run a flexible individual patient list system, believing that this offers the best opportunity for longitudinal patient care. Inevitably this has become more relaxed over recent years. Each partner is a general
family doctor, and is not involved in substantial responsibilities outside the practice, other than a number of local nursing and residential homes.
We (and our patients!) are fortunate that we have a choice of local hospitals: West Berkshire Community Hospital (Newbury), Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals, Reading, Savernake Community Hospital, Marlborough, Great Western Hospital, Swindon, and the Oxford Hospitals (John Radcliffe, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Radcliffe Infirmary, and Churchill Hospital).
The team includes a strong practice nurse team, with four part-time RGNs, and there is at least one nurse working in the surgery all day. We have a long tradition of providing a wide range of services locally. A number of special clinics are held, including Ante-natal, nurse-led cervical cytology, child development, nurse-led child immunisations, and nurse-led Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetic clinics.
In addition to these we have a number of other services and clinics held in the surgery, or in the community health clinic, which is "in" our car-park. These include three counsellors, dietician, and speech therapy. A local osteopath holds clinics for most of the week in one of our three treatment rooms.
The surgery has excellent community nurses and health visitors (based in the community health clinic), and midwife. Physiotherapy and Podiatry suites are also in this building.
Our excellent administrative staff are led by the Practice Manager and Office Manager. There are six other part-time office staff, and a medical secretary.
All consultations are normally by appointment. Out-of-hours care is provided by Westcall, which covers all practices in West Berkshire , with its emergency centre at West Berkshire Community Hospital in Newbury.

Louise Saunders, who has worked previously as a chiropractor in London and all over England, and on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, has now opened her own practice in Hungerford. She aims to bring her chiropractic skills to the whole community, though she is particularly interested in the treatment of members of the racing fraternity. She specialises in a form known as Koren Specific Technique, a gentle technique used to treat spine and cranium. Louise says this treatment is ideal for people with acute pain, as well as for those recovering after surgery, and perfect for the older client.
