For four years Alex’s secret mission has been to create a word and get it implanted in the English language. Since then his new words have appeared in most of the national newspapers, on Sky News, the Daily Politics Show and in an interview with George Alagiah on BBC World seen by 250 million people. This evening he recounts the highs and lows of this undercover linguistic campaign, and signs copies of his books.

Austen’s WomenAusten’s Women Co-written and performed by Rebecca Vaughan

Co-written & directed by Guy Masterson.

In this glorious distillation of favourite moments from the author’s complete works, thirteen of Jane Austen’s beautifully-observed women spring to life in scenes ranging from high comedy to profound pathos as they fall in and out of love, make friends and enemies - and commit shocking improprieties! You do not need to have read Jane Austen to enjoy this wickedly funny show, but it will almost certainly inspire you to do so!

Rebecca’s dazzling performance received 5-star reviews at its premiere in last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

‘A startling feat of performance, portrayal, writing & direction...strongly recommended’ Edinburgh Fringe Review

‘Vaughan's performance was unfaultable...this is a thoroughly enjoyable exploration of women and is thoroughly recommended’ Edinburgh Guide

In addition to film and television work, Rebecca Vaughan’s recent theatre credits include The Picture of Dorian Gray (Bill Kenwright), Room 24 (Nuffield Theatre); Havisham (BAC). She continues her wider training in Improvisation, Clowning (including Street Clowning) and Puppetry.

This Farming LifeThis Farming Life with Tom and Barbara Brown

‘A wonderful, magical and memorable evening’ Artservice

‘Two of the finest singers on the folk scene; each is blessed with a wonderfully strong, rich and earthy tone of voice and a definitive, innate grasp of harmony’ NetRhythm

Integrating archive film and traditional song together in an innovative way, This Farming Life combines images and words about farming and rural life from as early as the 1920s through to the 1970s. From heavy horses, through early traction, the drift from the land, rural industries, and a great deal more, the show includes interviews with farming people, documentary extracts, silent archive footage, early television news features, folk songs, modern songs and readings, resulting in an entertaining, informative and nostalgic evening which induces laughter as it stirs memories.

Barbara and Tom (who plays guitar, mandola, concertina and melodeon) have been singing together since 1970 and perform at gigs all over the UK. Although their speciality is songs of the West Country, their repertoire draws from a huge range of traditional and modern songs.

The Edwardian Cello - A Musical Entertainment The Edwardian Cello - A Musical Entertainment with Miss Melanie Dennerly, violoncello & Mr Michael Lunts at the pianoforte

A witty and nostalgic recreation of a typical musical soiree from 1912, a period when the cello gained popularity as a solo instrument owing to pieces such as Mendelssohn’s Song without Words, Saint-Saёns’ The Swan and Elgar’s Salut d’Amour, all of which feature in the programme, along with comic songs of the period.

Michael Lunts is well known to Hungerford for his one-man shows about composers (The Last Ballade, Winter in Majorca, etc) and for revues such as More Tea, Vicar? and Pass the Port.

A freelance cellist playing in orchestras such as the Hallé, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the BBC Philharmonic, Melanie Dennerly has also found herself sharing platforms (on separate occasions) with Rod Stewart and Ken Dodd! She is a member of two string quartets

My Real War, 1914 - ?My Real War, 1914 - ? Performed by Philip Desmeules

Adapted from War Letters by Havilland Le Mesurier & directed by Tricia Thorns.

Recently performed in a month-long West End run at the Trafalgar Studios, My Real War poignantly details the life of a young soldier, Lem, as he slowly succumbs to the horrors of the battlefields of the Great War.

‘Philip Desmeules, with his piercing blue eyes and gawky stage presence, superbly captures Lem’s attractive humour, sharp observation and growing conviction that he is caught up in a horror that makes no sense’ Daily Telegraph

Hungerford actor Philip Desmeules’ theatre credits include A View from the Bridge in the West End, Uncertainty at the Arts Theatre, The Hygiene Hypothesis at Theatre503 and Hamlet at Greenwich Park. His television work includes Little Dorrit, Doctors and The Trafalgar Battle Surgeon.

The Trials of Galileo by Nic YoungThe Trials of Galileo by Nic Young Performed by Tim Hardy

Written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s discoveries, The Trials of Galileo explores the tensions between science and religion through one man’s struggle for intellectual and spiritual salvation. Already denounced by the church in 1616 and forbidden to advocate or teach Copernican astronomy, in 1632, following the publication of his most famous work, Dialogue concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was tried by the Inquisition, found ‘vehemently suspect of heresy’, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

‘A thrilling show about one of the crucial moments in the history of Western civilisation: the confrontation between science and religion… This is drama that makes you think but also laugh and cry. Anyone who loves theatre should see this performance’ Peter Holland, former Director of The Shakespeare Institute

‘Passionate, intelligent, hilarious, chilling’ Gary Taylor, General Editor of The Oxford Shakespeare’s Complete Works

Tim Hardy has directed and performed in many productions across the UK, Europe and the United States. As well as roles in numerous musicals, operas and films, including Guys and Dolls, Don Giovanni and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, he has also performed in television programmes for the BBC and ITV and narrated over 300 television documentaries.
