Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer Written & performed by Aidan Dooley One of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions: Discovery (1901-04), Terra Nova (1910-13) and Endurance (1914-16), Tom Crean is one of Ireland’s unsung heroes. His 36-mile solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue two comrades has been described by historians as ‘the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration’. His story, a riveting testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, is brought vividly to life with charm and humour in this multi award-winning performance. Winner of The Scotsman Fringe Awards 2006; Best Actor Nomination, Dublin Fringe Festival; Best Solo Performance Award Winner, New York International Fringe Festival.... ‘This magnificent revelation of a fascinating character simply compels a standing ovation’ The Irish Times.... ‘An unparalleled portrayal’ New York Times.... ‘You will go to the end of the earth to find theatre this rewarding’ The Australian. The Dorothy Squires Story Play & cabaret performed by Gerri Smith. Pianist: Ian Thomas Play written by Mark Ryan & directed by Gareth Gibbs. One of the greatest singers of our time, Dorothy Squires began her glittering career at the age of 16 when she was hired to sing with Billy Reid’s band. Their subsequent partnership took them to the top and earned them a fortune. At the height of her fame, Dorothy met an unknown actor named Roger Moore, and put her own career on hold to help him make it in America. The play encompasses their tempestuous marriage and highly publicised divorce (she sued him for restitution of her conjugal rights – and won!), her electrifying performance at the London Palladium in 1970, and how she came to end her days poor and homeless. Like Dorothy Squires, Gerri Smith was born in Swansea. She is known internationally for her appearances as Vera Lynn and for her one-woman cabaret, Bird's Eye View. Her work as an actress includes television, film, radio and stage, and she is a director of the pre-eminent murder mystery company, Murder on the Menu. ‘Just’ Pete Allen - A Clarinade of Music An evening in Pete’s highly entertaining company, with songs and music (his multi-instrumental playing includes clarinet, saxophones and banjo) ranging from jazz, country and classical to well-known melodies and party favourites, and humorous tales of his 33 years in show business. Pete has topped the bill in those magical homes of jazz, St Louis, Sacramento and of course New Orleans, where he was awarded an Honorary Citizenship for his services to jazz music. Regarded as one of Europe’s most talented and exciting masters of the clarinet, his musical style has won him a worldwide enthusiastic following both of traditional jazz fans and those who simply enjoy happy music and foot-tapping songs. Playing Burton Performed by Josh Richards with post-show talkback Written by Mark Jenkins Directed by Guy Masterson One of the most powerful actors of the 20th century, rarely out of the papers for three decades and famously married to Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton appeared to waste his talent, squander his millions, and drink himself to an early death. But the real Burton, little Richie Jenkins, was known only to a few. Josh Richards reincarnates both actor and myth in a profoundly moving performance directed by Burton’s great-nephew, Guy Masterson. ’An exceptionally powerful and darkly haunting performance... It's faultless, riveting, brilliantly charismatic and peerlessly acted.’ The Scotsman .... ‘So bloody brilliant it's right off the scale!’ BBC Radio Scotland ... ‘An unforgettable distillation of the essence of Burton's uniqueness. A shattering portrayal!’ Daily Mail Trained at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, Josh Richards has a huge range of TV, film and theatre credits, including the RSC, Theatr Clwyd, Northern Broadsides, Hull Truck Theatre Company, Almeida Theatre, etc. Mark Jenkins is one of Wales's leading writers of theatre and film. Playing Burton is the most successful new Welsh play of the last 25 years, with over a thousand performances on three continents. Tickets £6 from Newbury Building Society (Hungerford) |

Truly Yours, C.B. The Story of Charlotte Brontë Written & performed by Alison Neil - Directed by David Collison This enthralling and moving play recreates a life as remarkable as any novel. Determined, brilliant and romantic, Charlotte managed – despite her background and all the constrictions of early Victorian life - the incredible feat of becoming a hugely famous novelist, and the instant success of Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette found her mixing with the literary giants of the age. Former West End actress Alison Neil has written and performed several highly-acclaimed one-woman shows (including The Sixth Wife which she performed at HADCAF last year). She is also an historical researcher and writer for such large-scale events as the VE Day Celebrations in Hyde Park and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Pageant. As Time Goes By Patricia Godwin A Sparkling Cavalcade of Fashions, Wit and Words, 1900-1950. Some years ago Patricia - a freelance artist and Artistic Director of the Palm Court Theatre Orchestra - was offered a unique family collection of period clothes, accessories, magazines and newspapers of the 20th century, which had been part of a display in a stately home. Her talk provides a fascinating insight into the social whirl of those earlier times, weaving together interesting and entertaining snippets of information with wonderful items from that extraordinary collection, including Victorian mourning dress, Edwardian bloomers, Twenties Charleston dresses, Thirties ball gowns, tea dresses and cruise wear, Forties munitions overalls, Fifties glazed cotton shirtwaister, magnificent hats and once-fashionable accessories.
